Credit Report Fallacies

Maintaining a healthy skepticism about any information you come across can serve you well in a lot of situations. This is true as well when it comes to knowing more about your credit report. One of the common fallacies about a credit report is that it can be fixed instantly just by hiring a credit repair company. These companies can work to remove inaccurate and erroneous information on your credit report. They will send dispute letters to creditors and credit bureaus to contest the data listed on your history. If it is a fact though that you did have missed payments or have maxed out your credit cards, no amount of dispute letters can change that.

Another mistaken assumption about the credit report is that you don't have to check yours if you don't have that much credit are conscientious in paying your bills. The truth is a significant percentage of credit reports contain errors so you still have to review your credit report if only to ensure its accuracy. Credit reports are also susceptible to identity theft. Your standing as a borrower can be seriously damaged if someone used your credit report and left a mass of debts.

A lot of people are also fooled by claims of various companies that they provide free credit reports. You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from all three national credit bureaus once every 12 months. Most of these companies only provide free services within the trial period and automatically charge your credit card after that period expires. It is important to arm yourself with the right information so you won't fall for these false claims.
